Not Serious Protection
I gave these pants the ultimate test courtesy of a deer last week and I DO NOT consider these jeans to be "serious" protective gear. I know my road rash would've been much worse in regular jeans but the worst of it was in the knee area. The CE padding was riding too high in the pant to be of any use during the slide and at 30 MPH or so, I went through all three layers of Kevlar blend fabric in the impact area and I still had to give myself the dreaded "rock-and-tar-scrub" in the tub. Stay out of the canyons and stick to the short trips in these jeans.

PROS: Comfortable, Stylish

BEST USES: Street Riding, Short trips
Saved my skin!!
Going too fast on a twisty mountain road. Lost the front end. My bike and I slid about 100 feet across the pavement. Full helmet, Sedecci gloves, leather jacket and boots. Bilt Ironworker jeans with armored underwear. The jeans looked like they had been attacked by a chainsaw. Totally destroyed. But the Kevlar did not wear through and the only injury I had was a small road rash where there was no Kevlar. I wear them anytime I leave town on my motorcycle. Great product. Great price.

PROS: Comfortable, Abrasion Resistant

BEST USES: Street Riding, Safety

Finally starting to get it!
OK, so I've been looking for a pair of protective riding jeans ever since I laid down my Vulcan 3 years ago. Helmet, jacket, gloves, and boots did what they were supposed to do but my Levi's let me down protection wise. Most of the riding jeans I have found are designed for the much younger crowd - too baggy, too much styling detail, and they look like bike gear. How about jeans that look like plain levi or lee jeans that protect? Enter BILT Ironworkers. These are a relaxed (not loose) fit in a dark wash finish. There are pockets for armor in the knees (included) and even on the hips. They feel comfortable and look nice without being "too over the top." Now the not so good - the included knee armor is flat, not shaped. This makes the knees bulge to the side when standing. Also where the Kevlar is attached to the pants there is contrasting detail stitching on the face of the jeans. As a 50+ year old cruiser rider a more stealthy, low profile look would be more welcome. Because the jeans are a dark wash I was able to take a sharpie permanent fine point marker to the baby blue stitching on the front and back of the legs, leaving the traditional orange side seam stiching. Now they look more like plain jeans. Also the articulated knee (more fabric on the outside)is not stalthy enough - put it on the inside for protection, but don't emphasize it on the outside. Back pockets are nice and plain without any detail embelishment. Also Kevlar is a 70/30% mix of Kevlar and polyester. I don't know if this will affect the protection part but every other brand I have seen are 100% Kevlar. As a shorter rider a shorter inseam option would be appreciated as well. All in all, if you need a protective riding jean that looks more like a basic street wear jean, grab a sharpie and your wallet - these may be okay for you. They are appropriately priced when on sale.

PROS: Good color, Decent fit, Good price on sale

CONS: Need other colors, Need shorter length, Too much detail stitching

BEST USES: Casual Wear, Riding of course
Almost great
I want to love them because of the styling. The jeans fit me perfectly (waist and length), but the knee armor and Kevlar in knees rides high. When I put a knee on the ground, only the very bottom edge of the armor is between my knee and the ground. If the leg rides up just a little, my bare knee will hit the ground unprotected. I may return them just for this reason. And as others have said, the knee pads are flat as a board. No body contour to them. They look goofy. Wondering if they'll break in.

PROS: Breathable, Comfortable, Stylish

CONS: Armor rides high, Kevlar blend, Board-like knee armor

I've been riding for years with regular jeans - always avoided motorcycle pants due to the usually high price. These are a great deal, and are much higher quality than you'd expect for the price.

They have all the standard features of motorcycle pants - knee pads, areas reinforced with kevlar, etc. I've found riding is much more comfortable with these, and the cut fits nicely over my boots.

The only con I've found so far is that the zipper has a tendency to come down during a long ride - so make sure you check yourself once you get off the bike!

Do yourself a favor and get a pair of these pants.

PROS: Breathable, Comfortable, Weather Resistant, Abrasion Resistant, Well Insulated

CONS: Zipper, Heavy

Too Short in the Leg
Inseam needs to be 2" longer so they "stack" right. That way when you bend your knees in the saddle, they don't ride up to your shins. The size chart doesn't list pants, so I have no idea what size they're supposed to be. My 38R pants are about a 32 inseam, which would be ok for street wear, but not long enough for riding. They should be 34". Other sizes need to be lenghtened, too. Otherwise, they're fine. I wear them all the time.

PROS: Comfortable, Breathable, Abrasion Resistant

CONS: Poor Fit

shortcoming easily overcome
I noticed right off that the knee pads ride up too high when the wearer is seated (as in riding a motorcycle). The knee pads are easily removed and if you turn them upside down and put them back in, the knee pads will be much better positioned for riding. These jeans work fine If you ride a standard or cruiser. If you ride a bike that requires your knees to be bent a lot (like a super sport) they won't provide coverage.

PROS: Breathable, Abrasion Resistant, Comfortable

BEST USES: Casual Wear, Off-Road, Street Riding, Safety

Comfortable with the padding in and even more comfortable when its out at home. Work great for every day jeans. I think im just going to make this my pants of choice for my entire closet! Definitely get a pair even if you dont need them.

What does Bilt mean by "Heat-Out"?
A shopper on Aug 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: They flow air pretty well. I wouldn't want to test out the protection feature, tho. They seem pretty darn UNprotective.
What is the inseam of these pants? A single size doesn't tell me anything. I wear a 38-40 inseam in my every day jeans.

What is zipper in back for?
A shopper on Jan 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The zipper is male and female. It allows you to take one side of the zipper off and have it sew onto a jacket to zip the 2 together while riding. Benefit is during the cold months you don't have a jacket riding up, if there is a accident the jacket is held down during a slide the the jeans so your back stays covered.

Are these jeans machine wash? Are they good for rainy days?
A shopper on Sep 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I've washed mine - just removed the knee pads first. They aren't water proof for the rain. They are really jeans material with Kevlar added in key spots.
