Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. In the realm of consumables, motorcycle engine oil is an unsung hero. Racing, off-road and V-Twin riders certainly appreciate what it does, but rarely praise how it performs. We think it’s time to put a little more thought into the type of motorcycle motor oil you’re using and if it’s the best blend for the job. (Speaking of jobs, an oil change is a great way to get to know your bike so learn the steps at the previous link!)
Using 4 stroke motor oil for motorcycles is important, as its automotive counterpart has been designed with just the motor in mind. (Cars have transmission fluid to look after the shifting mechanisms; oil in a motorcycle is cooling the clutch, lubing the engine and taking care of the gearbox.) The next step should be deciding between synthetic motorcycle engine oil or mineral. The latter might be more cost-effective, but a synthetic blend is going to be better for the moving parts within the engine while performing as planned at extremely hot or cold conditions. Riders will want to consider the viscosity of the oil they are running as well as its measured flow in extreme temperatures and ability to collect and remove impurities.
While it’s possible to pick an oil that best meets your riding style and wrenching frequency, there are V-Twin engine oil options that have been designed with the air-cooled cruiser in mind. Similarly, there are racing-specific blends that are well-suited for wet clutches and the punishing demands of competition.
