Video: A fork that rebuilds itself

Apr 24, 2019

Fork service can be a pain. It’d be really, really nice if they could just service themselves, you know?

You might know Time Flies By Moto for their stop-motion KX250 YouTube videos, which previously covered a full teardown and a shock rebuild. The latest video, a fork rebuild, is my favorite yet. It’s just under five minutes, but I can’t imagine the feat of planning and editing it took to make this video. To give you an idea, Time Flies By writes that the video took over 200 hours and more than 5,000 photos!

I needed answers, so I turned to RevZilla’s video team for some insight. They live and breathe video, though ZLA doesn’t use stop-motion techniques in our usual videos. The team was also blown away. Chase, who used to use stop-motion professionally at a previous job, was particularly impressed with the components and tools suspended in air. Little touches, such as the fork tubes swinging slightly past their position before self-righting, are the details that make a boring job so entertaining to watch. When was the last time you laughed a little while rebuilding suspension?

If you’ve never had fork legs apart before, this is not a bad way to see how an example of an upside-down unit fits together. (If you’d like to learn more about fork construction, check out Lemmy’s excellent article on the subject.) It seems that Time Flies By Moto is taking the teardown as an opportunity to put in some nice parts while making a fascinating video. Race Tech’s parts are popular choices for restoring a fork or tuning it to a rider’s preferences. A simple spring swap can make a bike feel like a whole new machine.

Hope you enjoyed your daily dose of satisfaction and wonderment. Think I’ll go watch it again...
