While middleweight adventure bikes are having their moment, middleweight sport-touring motorcycles in the U.S. market continue to be rare. Suzuki is addressing that and has just confirmed that its SV-7GX is coming to the United States and at a price that, to be honest, is a little better than I expected.
To be accurate, Suzuki doesn't call the SV-7GX a sport-tourer, but instead labels it a "crossover," joining the lineup below its big brother the GSX-S1000GX+, which it clearly imitates. But while the liter-size GX is loaded with features ranging from electronic suspension to integrated luggage and lists for $18,749, the SV-7GX comes a whopping 10 grand less, at $8,399 for the plain white version, which is labeled the SV-7GXV, and $8,599 for the other two colors, labeled the SV-7GX.

As we reported when Suzuki unveiled the new model last year, the SV-7GX carries on the long-lived and widely beloved SV650 platform that some of us thought was headed for extinction. The GX keeps the SV's trellis frame and 645 cc V-twin engine that still has fans in a time when parallel twins have taken over the middleweight segment, but updates the engine to make it compliant with European emissions standards. Beyond that, the GX adds adjustable (with tools) wind protection, upright ergonomics, and added features such as a bidirectional quickshifter and multi-level traction control. While the middleweight GX sticks to the basics, unlike the all-the-features approach of its liter-sized sibling, it's hard to find too much fault with basic suspension and brakes given the price point.
Personally, I think the price point is the news. At $8,599, the SV slots in below the limited number of competitors in the U.S. market, such as the Triumph Tiger Sport 660 at $10,445 or the Kawasaki Versys 650 LT at $10,399. To be fair, the Triumph has a more powerful three-cylinder engine and the Versys comes with integrated luggage, but by my view the price for the Suzuki is still a welcome surprise. I wasn't sure it was going to go that way, considering that Suzuki priced its updated but still five-speed DR-Z4S at $8,999, even more than this SV which has more features.

As is often the case, the SV-7GX is coming out first in Europe, before reaching the U.S. market, and European motorcycle media have already had a chance to test ride the bike. In general, reviews have been positive. Meanwhile, if you've already made up your mind and decided you want one, Suzuki is taking reservations through July 31, which ensures you'll get one of the first ones to arrive.
