Video: Completing the Paris-Dakar Rally... and a lifelong dream

Aug 13, 2022

Lawrence Hacking became the first Canadian to complete the Paris-Dakar Rally in 2001. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast and racer, Hacking’s dream of completing the 21-day event nearly vanished when his Honda XR rally bike developed stator problems in the middle of the desert.

A little luck and a lot of perseverance gave the 46-year-old another chance to be the first of his countrymen to complete the challenge. “It's far easier to put up with three weeks of hardship than a lifetime of disappointment,” Hacking explains.

“Mile by Mile” is a short film about Hacking's Dakar attempt. It's directed by Mark Bone and produced by Motosocial and The Art of Documentary.

Side note: our man Spurgeon found this moto-documentary over on Vahna. In case you haven’t heard, Vahna was formerly known as Meta until a certain social media giant decided to rebrand. Denver-based Meta Vahna has been publishing motorcycle stories since 2014.

“We value our individuality above all else, so when the news broke that a corporate Goliath was changing its name to Meta, it felt like a punch to the gut,” says a post on Vahna’s site. “With the flip of a switch our identity was suddenly watered down, and we watched our name circle the drain and wash away with something we had no control over. But our brand is much more than just a name… We speak to inspire and encourage the rare breed of humans out there bold enough to chase their dreams and never look back.”

Find Lawrence Hacking’s latest adventures on Instagram. Mark Bone mostly focuses on cinematography and content creation tips, but his YouTube channel also features a look at how “Mile by Mile” was shot.
