Triumph reveals dirt bike chassis and engine before full model launch

Aug 17, 2023

“You talk about things that keep you up at night, going racing is one of them,” Bobby Hewitt admits in Triumph’s latest YouTube video. A suspenseful soundtrack backs the Triumph Racing Team principal’s sound bite. Overlaid footage of Hinckley’s all-new single-cylinder engine amps up the drama. “The last 18 months, there hasn’t been a lot of sleep,” Hewitt reveals.

Motocross fans can probably relate.

In 2021, Triumph shook up the motocross world when it announced plans to release a full dirt bike range. More than two years later, the British brand prepares to finally bring the project to market — but not without a healthy dose of teasers to set the stage.

First up: the chassis.

Triumph debuted its “Vision to Reality” video series in late July. With AMA Supercross and motocross great Ricky Carmichael emceeing, the episode unveiled the lineup’s aluminum spine frame. Words like “stability,” “traction,” and “nimble” followed shortly behind, but the five project leads also gloated over the platform’s “rigidity” and “flexibility.”

According to the panel, the ground-up-built engine strikes a similar balance.

Published this week, the latest “Vision to Reality” installment spotlights the firm’s powerplant. That first look isn’t an in-depth look, however. Carmichael and crew go heavy on the superlatives but light on details. The audience hears of the thumper’s “low-end response” and “top-end pull” without ever seeing how it achieves such feats. Apparently, The GOAT will just have to show the public instead.

On September 5, Triumph will release yet another teaser. This time, Carmichael will swing a leg over the bike, putting its capabilities on full display. The video will finally unveil the long-awaited dirt bike, but it’s just the beginning for Triumph Racing.

In April, the British OEM disclosed plans to enter its four-stroke, 250 cc MX machine in both the 2024 SuperMotocross World Championship in the United States and MXGP’s MX2 category in Europe. The Hinckley factory will then field its 450 cc race bike in the AMA premier class and MXGP series the following season. To prep both models for the battles ahead, Triumph enlisted former 125 cc Supercross champion Ivan Tedesco and ex-MXGP racer Clément Desalle as test riders.

Triumph test rider Ivan Tedesco also captured the 2005 AMA 125 cc National Motocross title and three Motocross of Nations championships with Team USA. Triumph photo.

Still, the MX world is champing at the bit to see the manufacturer’s first motocrosser. As Hewitt so eloquently put it, “They’re going to love the fact that we’re dropping clips on this stuff but they’re not going to be happy that we’re not showing the whole bike, so you better get to the next episode pretty quick.”

I couldn't say it better myself.
