Three weeks ago, I noted that the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship was starting up for the 40th time at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in rural central Tennessee, an event that was a formative part of life for many professional racers and thousands of other passionate amateurs. A few days ago, record rainfall hit that area and caused devastating floods, and in this case the word "devastating" feels inadequate.
Motocrossers are now taking action to help in the form of Racers 4 Waverly.
The small town of Waverly is just a few miles north of the Loretta Lynn Ranch. Its community hospital is where racers were taken for treatment, if needed. Some local residents worked at the motocross championship. About two dozen members of that community are dead, including seven-month-old twins torn from their father's arms, and many more are still missing.
Up to 17 inches of rain fell in the area, and much of Waverly was swept away.
At the Loretta Lynn Ranch itself, ranch foreman Wayne Spears was carried away and died in the flood.

The floods were caused by a massive rainstorm that dropped nearly 15 inches of rain in 24 hours, catching the entire community off guard. pic.twitter.com/m36uq3GCio

To enable the motocross community to help those who suffered from the flood, MX Sports set up Racers 4 Waverly. Instead of going through the slow process of creating a new structure, Racers 4 Waverly uses the existing Road 2 Recovery Foundation, a charity that supports injured motorcycle racers.
Racers 4 Waverly is accepting monetary donations and donations of gear to be auctioned off. I'm confident the motocross community will come through in a big way. Visit the site for more information.
