Mecum announces plans for auction of National Motorcycle Museum collection

Apr 26, 2023

Serious motorcycle collectors, start your engines. Mecum Auctions has confirmed that hundreds of motorcycles and thousands of pieces of art and memorabilia will go up for auction the day after the National Motorcycle Museum closes in September.

As we reported earlier, the museum, located in Anamosa, Iowa, will close September 5. J&P Cycles co-founders John and Jill Parham were instrumental in the creation of the museum and its move to Anamosa 22 years ago. Many of the motorcycles are from the estate of the late John Parham, who was also inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Mecum has scheduled a multi-day auction at the museum for September 6 through 9. Mecum has created a page on its website for the auction but has not begun posting its usual detailed descriptions yet. It did, however, mention a few highlights among the more than 300 U.S., British, and Japanese bikes that will go up for sale.

  • 1936 Norton International Road Racer
  • 1927 Brough Superior SS100 Pendine
  • 1955 Vincent Black Prince
  • 1952 Vincent Black Shadow
  • 1937 Harley-Davidon EL Knucklehead

In addition to the motorcycles, 6,000 pieces of "Road Art" divided into more than 1,000 lots will be auctioned. The museum has a huge and eclectic collection of materials that tell the story of motorcycling, and some unique items are sure to be up for sale.

The preview day is September 5 and registering as a bidder costs $100. That gets you two admissions if you want to bid on site. You can also bid by phone or online.

It's rare for a motorcycle collection of this scope to be put up for sale. It will be interesting to watch the Mecum postings for the auction as they go public. Many of these motorcycles will no doubt sell for a lot of money, but ogling is free.
