How to watch the Toronto Motorcycle Film Festival without traveling to Toronto

Sep 16, 2021

The annual Toronto Motorcycle Film Festival (TMFF) returns for 2021, but even if you're not able or ready to travel again or comfortable sitting in a movie theater with strangers just yet, you can still see the films.

TMFF is offering online viewing for all 25 of the festival’s entries through TMFF Cinema. (Some videos are only available to stream in Canada, unfortunately, but the majority can be viewed worldwide.)

Online tickets with access to all 25 films are $65 CAD, or just over 50 bucks for those in the United States. If you’d rather see one specific film, prices range from free to $9 CAD ($7 USD). Films are available from September 17 through 25, 2021. Get tickets online. Ticketholders will also have access to virtual and live Q&As with filmmakers.

Here’s a sampling of what you can see at this year’s TMFF, as described by the filmmakers.

"Chasing the Championship"

Chrissy Rouse is a part-time school teacher, podcast host, and bike racer in the British Superbike National Superstock 1000 series. Sidelined with a shoulder injury and having lost his ride, the 2020 pandemic lockdown threw him a lifeline, giving him time to recover from surgery, find a new team and ultimately rise to capture the 2020 National Superstock title. Directed by Dave Baum. Produced by Andi Reiss and Dave Baum. 55 minutes.

"The Wall"

Built in 1928, The Original Motodrom is the oldest traveling wall of death in the world and will soon be 100 years old. The four "Motorellos," Capt. Donald Ganslmeier, El Clemente, Peter Petersen and The Flying Dutchman, are keeping the soul of their vintage motorcycles alive by riding the wall of death and entertaining hundreds of thousands of people. For them, the passion for the wall still burns strong. Directed by Stephane Gautronneau. Produced by ASG & Commune Image Media. 74 minutes.

"It's Worth It"

A piston is summoned to take the hero's journey and rebuild the 1993 KX250 two-stroke dirt bike engine it will live in. "It's Worth It" is the result of approximately 500 hours worth of work and contains somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 unique photos. It's not a tutorial, but you might learn something from it or at the very least be entertained. Directed and produced by Nick Hagman. Nine minutes.

"Fifteen Thousand Revolutions per Minute"

Yohann, a 26-year-old mechanic, holds the title of French vice-champion in sidecar cross. When injury forces him to stop racing, he sets up a shop in the quiet countryside to design and renovate old motorcycles and café racers. Céline, his partner, takes care of the administration in parallel with her main job as a special education teacher while providing the emotional support to keep Yohann going. Together they create a small and intimate world. Directed by Grégoire Darasse. Produced by Fanny Chrétien. 52 minutes.

"Going Beyond — Margot's Incredible Journey"

At 64, Margot got on a motorcycle for the first time in her life and took off. On the back of a Honda 125 cc she travelled halfway around the world from Germany, deep into central Asia to explore. Margot's journey is a fresh take on the epic road trip film, told through the eyes of an aging, and new, female rider intent on pushing back against what society thinks she should do at her age, and reconfirming to herself that the world and its people are beautiful. Directed by Johannes Meier and Paul Hartmann. Produced by Streets Films. 110 minutes.
