Some know him as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Others remember him as Edward Bloom or Mark Renton. But to motorcyclists, he’s simply Ewan.
Ever since “Long Way Round” debuted in 2004, the riding community has widely embraced Ewan McGregor. Moto enthusiasts have grown accustomed to seeing the actor’s less glamorous side, but it’s important to remember that he’s still a celebrity. That celebrity status a major reason his 1973 Moto Guzzi V7 Sport is now on sale for $46,000.
It’s easy to attribute that hefty pricetag to Ewan’s fame. While his notoriety is a contributing factor, without a doubt, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill Goose, either. That’s because McGregor brought the bike to Cycle Garden, a custom shop in Indio, California, for a full restoration in 2010.
No nut or bolt was left unturned, from the wheels to the dual gauges to the color-matched tank. The total cost of the restoration eclipsed $30,000, but it wasn’t the only work that went into the Guzzi.
In 2022, Ewan lent his acting talents and part of his bike collection to a Piaggio marketing campaign. Unfortunately, the V7 didn’t come out unscathed, thanks to a stunt rider damaging the engine during the shoot.
The incident prompted a full rebuild by Garden Cycle. High-compression 88 mm pistons pushed the V-twin’s volume to 955 cc, while a crankshaft lifted from a Moto Guzzi 850 T3 reportedly results in a smoother power delivery.
There’s no denying it. The V7 Sport is an impressive piece of machinery. Plus, it belongs to Charley Boorman’s best friend (sorry, Ewan). But, does that make it worth $46,000? If you ask me, a chronic cheapskate, the answer is no, but only those bidding on McGregor’s Guzzi will truly have a say in the matter.
