Last year, Dainese and Ducati announced they would be partnering by offering a special-edition Ducati Multistrada that would wirelessly pair with the Dainese D-Air system. This video is the closest we have to looking into the future of protection.
For those of you who haven’t heard of the D-Air system, it's basically an air bag system built into Dainese's racing leathers that inflates instantly in a crash. Dainese made a textile jacket which uses a street version of their airbag system. Until now, if you wanted the benefits of airbag technology on the street, you had to mount a controller unit to your bars, mount two accelerometers to your forks, and a lean-angle sensor under the seat, in addition to wearing the airbag unit. The sensors detect a collision or crash and inflate the jacket.
However, if you decide to pick up a new motorcycle in addition to your fancy air-jacket, the Ducati Multistrada is the bike for you. A Multistrada already fitted with all the sensors has been available in Europe and will come to the United States. Sure, the price barrier is a little high. In Europe, the specially equipped Multistrada costs almost $1,000 extra. But with the D-Air sensors already mounted, all you have to do is hop on the Multistrada and ride, knowing you’re 80 milliseconds away from being that much safer.
