Ducati "DVT" announcement coming this week

Oct 13, 2014

Just days after news broke that Ducati was preparing to bring variable valve timing to its lineup, the company announced that big news would be coming this week under the name "DVT"

Rumors have been swirling about an all-new Ducati Mutltistrada set to be released at EICMA to compete with the impending BMW S1000XR. Being the master of logic and inference that I am, I immediately jumped to the conclusion that DVT could, should, and must mean Ducati Variable Timing.

Variable valve actuation and timing are used in many car engines and this isn't the first time we've seen it in motorcycling. The Honda VFR800 utilized what Honda calls VTEC, which uses two valves per cylinder at lower engine speeds and switches to four valves per cylinder at higher rpms. While this brought power gains, it also made for a very complex cylinder heads and expensive valve adjustments. That may be less of big deal for Ducati owners, who are already sort of used to paying up for valve adjustments

Check back Wednesday for more info on Ducati's DVT announcement and expect to see the new Ducati Multistrada on Nov. 3 at EICMA in Milan, Italy.
