Since sport motorcycles sit at the apex of two-wheeled performance, riders need gear that’s up to the task. That goes double for sport riders who are hitting the track, where standards for protection are even higher.

Best track sport motorcycle gear
Our first rider is a track addict, possibly on a dedicated track bike. This rider is experienced and attends multiple track days per year to build skills and speed. A one-piece leather suit, race helmet, and substantial hand and foot protection are required. Comfort is important, but protection and performance are ultimately the most critical to this type of motorcyclist.
Best track sport helmet: LS2 Carbon Thunder Helmet
LS2 thoroughly impressed us when they released their new Carbon Thunder helmet. This carbon fiber beauty is reinforced with Kevlar for excellent strength at just 3.25 pounds (size medium). LS2 drew on their racing experience to develop this helmet, and as a result, it’s one of the very few helmets to earn FIM certification in addition to its DOT and ECE approval. This means the helmet meets the highest standards for use in motorcycle racing.

The track features don’t stop there, as the Carbon Thunder has emergency release pads, a wide viewport, and posts for tear-offs. We’re thrilled with LS2’s new flagship sport helmet, and it’s our top pick in its class for 2022.
Best track sport race suit: Alpinestars Missile V2 race suit
Last year, the Alpinestars Missile race suit was our recommendation for the serious sport rider. We’re updating that choice now that the Missile V2 has arrived. The Missile V2 is the most refined version of the Missile race suit yet, and for 2022, it’s our top pick for aggressive sport riders seeking protection at track speeds. To that end, the Missile V2 is compatible with Alpinestars’ Tech Air 5 airbag system, so be sure to consider that as an option. But let’s focus on this magnificent suit.

Alpinestars crafts the Missile V2 from premium perforated cowhide with stretch panels and gussets throughout. This suit is meant to be used in sport-riding positions only, with an athletic precurve that encourages a full tuck. Alpinestars places external sliders at all critical joints, and also includes CE-certified GP-R protectors at the shoulders, elbows, and knees. A back hump helps with aero at speed. Inside, a mesh liner helps air and moisture to circulate as you work on your lap times. The Missile V2 suit delivers all the performance most sport riders will need with the comfort and style that has come to define Alpinestars’ lineup. The Missile V2 is CE approved as a Class AAA garment (pr-EN17092).
Best track sport gloves: Alpinestars GP Pro R3 gloves
Alpinestars’ GP Pro R3 gloves return for another year at the top of our list. As before, we applaud Alpinestars for using three different leathers (kangaroo, goat, and cow) for optimized protection and feedback.

As proper sport gloves, they have hard knuckles, pinkie retention elements, and a full gauntlet design that stays locked in place thanks to a double closure system Alpinestars calls Cuff DFS. These gloves inspire confidence with superb feel at the controls. As a result, the GP Pro R3 gloves are our gold standard for advanced sport riding.
Best track sport boots: Alpinestars SMX Plus V2 boots
Like the GP Pro R3 gloves above, the SMX Plus V2 boots were our favorites last year, and we’re choosing them once again because they remain unsurpassed. These boots are track-ready with their hard parts at all critical locations: heels, shins, toes, and ankles, The toe sliders can be replaced easily, as it is common for this area to wear when leaning hard.

The boots’ uppers are made with microfiber that resists abrasion without restricting necessary movement. Carefully placed stretch areas also aid mobility. We consider full ankle protection to be non-negotiable when it comes to track riding, and Alpinestars’ Multi-Link Control system is one of the best we’ve ever tried. The boots also feature ratchet closures with fine adjustment for the perfect fit. Alpinestars finishes these boots off with nice lateral zippers and their Lace-Lock system so that the SMX Plus V2s are easy to pull off after a day of chasing your best lap times.
Best budget sport motorcycle gear
Our second type of rider might be new to the world of sport bikes. These riders probably want to try a track day or two as they hone their skills. They also ride frequently on the street, so gear in this category must be ready for daily commutes, weekend trips to the canyons, and the occasional track experience. These selections provide plenty of protection without costing too much, because these riders also need to set aside a few bucks for sport riding supplies like tires, sprockets, brake parts, and tools.
Best budget sport helmet: Scorpion EXO R1 Air helmet
Scorpion really impressed us with their new EXO R1 Air helmet. Its feature set is fantastic for its price point, led by a fiberglass and aramid composite shell that has been aerodynamically tuned for superb balance. Vents and ram air channels keep the rider cool while twisting the wick. Another key feature is the AirFit adjustment system for a custom fit that improves comfort, safety, and wind noise.

Scorpion finishes off the R1 Air with a spacious viewport, anti-scratch face shield, removable wicking liner, and a removable aero chin skirt. This helmet punches far above its weight (just three pounds, three ounces in a medium) while providing all the protection sport riders will need as they build their skills. The EXO R1 Air helmet carries both ECE and DOT approval.
Best budget sport race suit: Sedici Corsa Race suit
Sedici’s all-new Corsa suit is the suit to beat in the budget sport category. Crafted from 1.2mm-1.3mm cowhide with four-way stretch and safety stitching in key areas, the Corsa has an aggressive race cut for use on sport motorcycles. Perforations throughout keep air flowing where riders need it, with a removable mesh liner inside for circulation. Of course, the Corsa includes armor in all the important locations: elbows, shoulders, and knees, all certified to EN 1621-1:2012 Level 2.

We chose this suit over the competition because it holds its own against more expensive gear without cutting corners. Features like TPR knee grips, functional ventilation, race-style graphics, and neoprene comfort trim give a premium feel to a solid suit. The Corsa is a fantastic first suit, a compelling budget option for experienced riders, and a capable street suit for spirited sport riders. Sedici also offers a two-piece version of the Corsa that separates the suit into a jacket and pants combo that zips together at the waist.
Best budget sport gloves: Sedici Corsa Race gloves
The Sedici Corsa gloves bring safety technologies seen on top tier gloves to the budget sport rider with beautiful goatskin leather construction in track-ready colors. Sedici precurves these gloves for superior fit, and their suede palms with silicone grip ensures a positive connection with your motorcycle. We are thrilled to see protective elements such as SuperFabric overlays, TPU sliders, aramid backing, and vented hard knuckles.

Gauntlet cuffs provide full wrist coverage for track or street riding. The Corsa gloves lock in place with dual closures, but don’t worry about pulling them off to access your phone or motorcycle touchscreen. The Corsa gloves are touchscreen-capable at the index fingers and thumbs. Practical, protective, and sporty to the core, the Corsa gloves are the best in their category for 2022.
Best budget sport boots: Sedici Corsa Race boots
It’s no surprise that the Sedici Corsa boots round out our selection of budget sport motorcycle gear for 2022. They are fully equipped for street or track use, and no other boots come close in this class. One of the most important features is the external hinged support for ankle protection, a crucial feature that lesser boots miss. Sedici uses durable microfiber for the Corsa uppers, and they back it up with reinforced midsoles, molded heels, TPU toe sliders, and outer calf sliders.

For comfort, the Corsa boots have accordion flex segments with perforation to allow airflow. Air moves throughout the boot using a mesh lining that also wicks moisture away from the feet in warm conditions. Adjust the Corsa boots to fit with ratchet closures, then zip them up to ride.
