In 1960, a 16-year-old Eddie Mulder won the Big Bear Run, a 150-mile race through California’s Mojave Desert.
“Fast Eddie” didn’t just top a field of 765 riders, he didn’t just beat racing legend Bud Ekins, he did so on a Royal Enfield Fury. Nearly 65 years later, Royal Enfield evokes memories of Mulder’s Big Bear victory with a new desert racer-inspired scrambler — the 2025 Bear 650.
As a part of RE’s 650 Twins lineup, the Bear is largely a known entity, but key changes define the new entry. The 648 cc parallel twin is just one example. The engine retains its 78 mm bore, 67.8 mm stroke, and 9.5:1 compression ratio. It also maintains a rating of 47 peak horsepower, but it now arrives 100 rpm lower, at 7,150 rpm.
The big difference is the mill’s claimed torque, which increases to 41.7 foot-pounds (compared to the INT650’s 38.6 foot-pounds). Royal Enfield attributes that torque gain, along with a broader powerband, to the model’s two-into-one exhaust system. The new pipes also contribute to the Bear 650’s scrambler aesthetic, as the other Twins feature dual exhausts.
The Bear also earns an inverted front end. Showa supplies the 43 mm fork as well as the dual rear shocks. Those suspenders lift the scrambler to 5.1 inches of front wheel travel, 4.3 inches of rear-wheel travel, and 7.2 inches of ground clearance. Compared to its stablemates, that’s 0.8 inches of additional travel (at both ends) and 0.4 inches of extra ground clearance.
Even the wheelset speaks to the model’s off-road inclinations, with the wire-spoked 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel wrapped in block-pattern MRF Nylorex-F tires. Completing the scrambler look is the Bear’s bench seat, handlebar crossbar, rear frame loop, and race-style number boards/side panels.
Similar to the new Himalayan and Guerrilla 450, the Bear boasts Royal Enfield’s full-color, four-inch, Tripper TFT dash. The scrambler also benefits from all-around LED lighting, making it the first Twin model equipped as such.
The first Bear 650 units will hit Royal Enfield dealerships in early November. The model starts at $6,849, but goes up to $7,199, depending on the paint option.
