2024 MV Agusta LXP Orioli packs luxury into a rugged ADV-tourer

Nov 07, 2023

Remember the Lucky Explorer 9.5 that MV Agusta debuted at EICMA 2021? The adventure bike concept imitating the 1990 and 1994 Dakar-winning Cagiva Elefants piloted by Edi Orioli? Yeah, that one. Well, the boutique bike maker hopes you do. After two long years out of the spotlight and a recent rebranding, the concept gives way to MV’s first full-size ADV: the special-edition (no surprises there) 2024 LXP Orioli.

Rich and rugged

When most riders think of off-road-capable motorcycles, the last thing that comes to mind is luxury. Where others see an oxymoron, MV Agusta sees an opportunity and it equips the limited-run model to fill the white space in an overcrowded category. As a “first-class” adventurer, the LXP Orioli piles exclusive goodies onto an all-new platform. That includes a certificate of authenticity and a dedicated kit box.

The LXP Orioli's kit box contains the Euro 5-compliant and U.S.-approved Termignoni titanium exhaust silencer (with carbon end cap and heat shield), a dedicated motorcycle cover, and a plaque of authenticity. MV Agusta photo.

In addition to the trim’s Lucky Strike-inspired graphics, the handwritten signature of Edi Orioli himself adorns the fuel tank. Each numbered unit also bears a serialized badge attached to the side of the subframe. The Orioli isn’t all pomp and no performance, though.

MV Agusta co-designed and co-developed the Orioli's Termignoni titanium silencer alongside the Italian exhaust specialists. MV Agusta.

A titanium Termignoni exhaust perks up the LXP, while aluminum side cases (totaling 71 liters in storage capacity) cater to touring duties. When it’s time to tackle the trail, tubeless spoked wheels, dirt-oriented Bridgestone Battlax AX41 tires, crash bars, and an aluminum engine guard come in handy. Now that we have the variant’s privileged parts out of the way, let’s take a look at the core package, shall we?

Beyond basic

MV’s current lineup is chockful of inline triples, but the new 931 cc triple-cylinder powering the LXP marks a new chapter for the Varese marque. As such, the 9.5 receives a model-specific crankcase along with brand-new lubrication and cooling systems. The engine’s counter-rotating crankshaft and DLC-coated dual-overhead cams also speak to the brand’s sport bike background. All these go-fast parts result in 124 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 75.2 foot-pounds of torque at 7,000 rpm. At least, according to MV Agusta.

The Urban, Touring, Off-Road, and Custom All-Terrain riding modes tailor the mill’s performance to the task at hand, while traction control boasts five road-based settings, two off-road options, and a Rain mode. The model’s six-axis IMU also drives its cornering ABS function, which integrates RLM (Rear Wheel Lift-Up Mitigation) for a continuously composed ride. MV even developed the ABS system to work with both knobby and road-focused tires.

MV claims the LXP's "instrumentation is inspired by the world of premium cars." That tracks. MV Agusta photo.

Tourers will appreciate the LXP’s cruise control, while launch control and a bi-directional quickshifter appeal to thrill seekers. As expected, the high-end adventure bike earns LED lighting all around and a full-color, seven-inch TFT dash. Riders can connect devices via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, but additional riding data and turn-by-turn navigation are available through the MV Ride app. To protect the customer’s investment, a Mobisat anti-theft system comes standard on the Orioli.

Whether pounding pavement or kicking up dirt, the high-tensile steel perimeter frame and bolt-on double-cradle undercarriage fully envelop the 9.5 triple. A steel trellis subframe also suits off-road excursions, while the height-adjustable seat lifts from 33.46 inches to 34.25 inches. With a fully adjustable 48 mm Sachs inverted fork and a progressively linked Sachs monoshock, the Orioli offers over 8.2 inches of travel at both ends.

The man himself: Edi Orioli claimed two of his four Dakar victories on Cagiva Elefant rally bikes. If that wasn't clear, his signature and name (in script) grace the LXP Orioli. MV Agusta photo.

The 5.28-gallon fuel tank enables mile-munching road trips, but the 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear hoop shine when the pavement ends. Brembo Stylema calipers deliver the utmost stopping power in both situations. The Schiranna-based firm also reports ergonomics and aerodynamics optimized for rider comfort.

While supplies last

MV Agusta will only produce 500 examples of the LXP in Orioli guise. The brand has yet to reveal the model’s MSRP, but customers can expect units to arrive by the end of Q1 2024. If the ultra-limited LXP is ultimately too rich for your blood, stay tuned. MV hinted at the standard LXP and other 9.5-based models following in the Orioli’s wake.
