In the battle of the limited-edition, big-dollar, super-premium U.S.-built flagships, Indian has taken the luxury comfort route, with a dash of heritage.
As we saw yesterday, Harley-Davidson drew a little on the company's Mission King of the Baggers series race bike when building its $42,999 limited-edition CVO Road Glide ST, but Indian already had its Challenger Elite for performance-oriented riders, so it took the opposite direction. Think arm rests, not track modes. On offer is the new-for-2024 Indian Roadmaster Elite, coming in at $41,999, just a thousand dollars under Harley-Davidson's newest CVO.
Whether with Harley-Davidson's CVO models or Indian's Elite models, stunning paint jobs are the first, basic expectation. The Roadmaster Elite draws on both early Indian history and modern expertise. The Indian Motorcycle Red color was first used on the 1904 Indian Camelback and the silhouette of that historic machine is on the individually numbered console of each of the 350 Roadmaster Elites. Going well beyond the traditional Indian red, the Elite gets a three-tone paint scheme in red, dark red, and black, all with a candy finish, and topped with hand-painted gold pinstripes. Indian partnered with custom paint shops Gunslinger Custom Paint in Colorado and Custom Painted Vehicles in Wisconsin and Indian says each paint job takes 24 hours to complete. Even the dash is painted gloss black for a more finished look.
As the top of Indian's line of touring bikes, the Roadmaster Elite ranks comfort at the top alongside looks. From the electronically adjustable tinted windscreen to the arm rests for the passenger and the color-matched stitched seat that is both heated and cooled, the Elite aims to ward off any discomfort.
Other premium features include the adaptive LED headlight that helps illuminate the route through corners, backlit switchgear, and Apple Carplay integration and GPS navigation in the full-color display. Then of course there's the stereo. If you want to win stereo bragging rights from a stock motorcycle, the Elite gives you 12 speakers and a 600-watt amp. Then it adds to the custom look with "UnderGlow" lighting on the speakers. LED lights are also incorporated into the saddlebags for visibility and a custom-bike appearance.
Harley-Davidson is now celebrating its 25th year of CVO models and Indian has embraced the limited-edition, premium segment as well with its Elite models. It seems motorcycles for the one percent are here to stay.
