To mark the 25th year of its special-edition CVO models, Harley-Davidson is taking the traditionally low-slung, heavily equipped, and gorgeously painted CVO line where it's never been before. Off-road, for example. Would you dare get a fancy CVO paint job dirty? On purpose? Harley's encouraging you to do that with the 2024 CVO Pan America.
The CVO Pan America is one — and surely the farthest from the norm — of several new models Harley-Davidson just revealed for 2024. I covered the returning models previously, but the new models for 2024, in addition to the Pan America, are a revised Street Glide and Road Glide and a CVO Road Glide ST. Might as well start with the outlier.
2024 Harley-Davidson CVO Pan America
This is the 25th year of Harley-Davidson's Custom Vehicle Operations, which produces a few limited-edition CVO models each year. It's safe to say that none of the previous CVOs have been anything like the Pan America adventure-touring bike. CVOs typically get a mild performance boost, a lot of optional features, unique and high quality paint jobs done in a separate line in the factory, and a corresponding jump in price, alongside their exclusivity. I haven't audited 25 years of Harley-Davidson promotional materials, but the film Harley-Davidson produced to announce its new models, titled "American Dreamin'" and seen below, has to be the first time the Motor Company has ever suggested splattering one of its expensive CVO paint jobs with mud. Thousands of previous CVO owners would have been appalled at the mere thought, but again, the Pan America takes the CVO line on a new detour.
The CVO Pan America's performance should be mostly the same as the Pan America 1250 Special on which it's based. The changes to the CVO model are mainly additional features and accessories. The CVO comes with a quickshifter and the Adaptive Ride Height feature that lowers the motorcycle when the rider comes to a stop, to make it easier to get two feet down. The CVO is also fully accessorized with aluminum side cases and top box, tubeless spoked wheels, an aluminum skid plate, heated grips, and LED auxiliary lighting.
Of course it gets the CVO paint treatment with a Legendary Orange color featuring a stylized Harley-Davidson number one. The engine guards are also painted orange to stand out, unlike the black ones that blend in on the Pan America 1250 Special.
The features, accessories, and exclusivity boost the price of the CVO Pan America by $8,400 over the 1250 Special, with an MSRP of $28,399, which still makes it at least $10,000 less expensive than any other CVO model we've seen in recent years.
2024 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide ST
The CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide from 2023 are back in the lineup, but the addition for 2024 is the CVO Road Glide ST. We've speculated before about when and how Harley-Davidson might try to get a return on its investment in the MotoAmerica King of the Baggers race series by offering consumers a motorcycle with some of the KOTB aura around it. The CVO Road Glide ST is a step in that direction and the "American Dreamin'" film shown above ends with a couple of guys who look remarkably like KOTB factory Harley racers Kyle Wyman and James Rispoli rocketing around the streets of Milwaukee in the kind of shenanigans that require a "do not attempt" disclaimer from corporate.
The CVO Road Glide ST gets the Milwaukee-Eight High Output 121 engine that's tuned to produce 127 horsepower and 145 foot-pounds of torque, according to Harley-Davidson. This version of the 121 engine has a higher redline at 5,900 rpm and makes peak horsepower a little higher, at 4,900 rpm.
At a claimed 838 pounds wet, the CVO Road Glide ST is still a full-figured motorcycle, but Harley-Davidson has made efforts to trim weight and add exclusive styling touches at the same time. The Road Glide's mufflers have titanium shells and forged carbon fiber end caps. The front fender, seat cowl, and tank console are also made from forged carbon fiber, which gives the parts a unique look, in addition to reducing weight.
Technology includes a full-color touch screen display and five preset ride modes (two for the track, which surely is a Harley-Davidson first) and multiple custom ride modes. And because this is still an upscale Harley-Davidson bagger, regardless of nods to the racing operation, you also get the full audio system with a 500-watt amplifier and 6.5-inch speakers in the fairing.
The CVO Road Glide ST is available in either Golden White Pearl or Raven Metallic paint schemes with a Screamin’ Eagle graphic on side at a starting price of $42,999.
2024 Harley-Davidson Street Glide and Road Glide
When Chris Force reviewed the 2023 Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide, he reported that a lot of attention was paid to the redesign of the fairings on the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide. The extra care makes sense, since the designers were tinkering with a very visible part of the motorcycle with decades of history. As expected, those redesigns that debuted on the CVO models are now mounted on the regular Street Glide and Road Glide. Harley-Davidson says the new fairings "reduce subjective helmet buffeting at highway speed by an average of 60 percent," and while I don't know how you can put a percentage on subjective feelings, it seems the improvement is real. Chris didn't put a number on it, but said the new Street Glide fairing's improvement is "massive."
The rider interface is now a 12.3-inch color touch screen that's powered by the Skyline OS. The two Glides offer four ride modes: Road, Sport, Rain, and Custom. A 200-watt amplifier powers speakers mounted in the fairing.
The Milwaukee-Eight 117 engine has been tweaked, according to Harley-Davidson, to provide a little more power and the cooling system was revised to direct heat away from the rider. Beyond the fairing, the Glides are pretty much the same. They even cost the same, at $25,999, so choose between the traditional bat wing — updated with its new look — or the frame-mounted fairing.
Scroll down below the CVO models to see specs for the Street Glide and Road Glide. I should be test riding these new Glides soon, so watch for more details and my impressions of how they work in the wild.
