2022 KTM 890 Duke GP first look

Feb 23, 2022

For 2022, KTM introduces its 890 Duke GP as a naked tribute to its GP racing efforts.

The 890 Duke GP is closely related to the 890 Duke R “Super Scalpel.” That means it uses KTM’s LC8c (liquid-cooled, eight-valve, compact) parallel twin. Owners can add Quickshift+ and flip the shift linkage for a one-up-five-down pattern to fully channel the GP inspiration.

The Austrians haven’t released the full specifications of this motorcycle, including key details like weight and price, but they’ve revealed a claimed 114 horsepower. Oddly, the Duke R sister model produces a claimed 119 horsepower. The power difference shouldn’t be noticeable while blasting either of the 890 Duke models down a canyon road. The 889 cc engine sits in a steel trellis frame with an aluminum subframe in typical KTM style.

Most of the 890 Duke GP’s differences are cosmetic changes to push the bike’s appearance in a more aggressive direction. A distinctive graphics package recalls the war paint worn by KTM’s MotoGP race machines, while a color-matched seat cowl at the tail reminds potential pillions that the passenger seat is only there in case of emergencies. A two-up tourer, the GP ain’t.

Lightweight wheels are carried over from the R model, although the front brake disc diameter has been reduced to 300 mm from the 890 Duke R’s 320 mm. All of the ride modes and safety features are the same between the two models. That means the GP gets 6D Cornering MTC that constantly analyzes lean, pitch, and even drift. Cornering MTC can be disabled if desired. Stock ride modes are Street, Sport, and Rain, with optional Track mode available as an upgrade, like on other KTM models. The color TFT dash holds menus that adjust throttle control, wheelie settings, supermoto mode, traction control, and more.

The 790 Duke line has been fully retired at this stage, and with the 890 Duke GP’s spec sheet showing a little less power and slightly smaller front discs, the GP should be Team Orange’s entry street twin with an MSRP near or below the R’s $11,999. The 890 Duke GP will reach dealers in the United States by April of 2022.
