The 2017 Dakar starts now

Jan 01, 2017

One thing that makes the start of a new year a happy new year is the Dakar rally.

This year's course runs through Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina and the race starts tomorrow in Asunción. Not only will the riders face a variety of terrain, from rocky mountains to sand dunes, but they'll also have six days of riding at 10,000 feet elevation to test their endurance.

No U.S. rider has ever won the Dakar. Last year, Ricky Brabec finished ninth in his first Dakar rally. He's back on his Honda CRF450 Rally to take a shot at improving his position this year. The favorite is probably last year's winner, Toby Price of Australia, who won the Dakar in just his second try. The rally is so difficult, that's something even the greatest competitors in the history of the event could not do. Among the manufacturers, KTM is plotting to extend its win streak to 16 Dakars.

In the United States, next-day recaps can be seen on NBCSN starting at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Tuesday.
