Kriega and Moto Guzzi: One Class Act
First off, I don't have another vehicle; my 1998 Guzzi V11 EV is it. Secondly, my commute is 120 miles one way, and I have to haul several days' worth of luggage and work-related materials with me. Furthermore, living in south Texas means that I will eventually be riding an torrential rain. When my saddlebag racks broke, I took a gamble and invested in a Kreiga 20, 10, and 5 liter bags. If they worked for me, I would then add other bags to suit my needs.

An upcoming one thousand mile round trip to Big Bend National Park was the perfect opportunity to put the bags to the test. I only had a week before departure, so installation had to be headache free. In short, installation was a breeze, and the bags were a pride and joy to use.

Installation: Removing two side panels and the seat presented logical mounting points on the frame. Attention was given to make sure that the mounting straps would not interfere with other systems of the bike, and that there would be no chaffing once the bike was again fully assembled. Several attachment points were possible. I chose the one that made me happiest. Within ten minutes all straps were secured, trimmed, and cut edges seared. It was a breeze! The Kreiga literature left me feeling that all the straps would confuse me, or be a grief to live with. In fact, the system is so logical and easy to operate, mounting and dismounting the bags takes mere seconds; and if you need to get into a bag while it is on the bike, no problem.

Now that I have lived with the bags for a month, and used them on five different trips, I have a better feel for actual bag capacity. I plan on buying a 30 liter bag. My initial thought was that it would be too big for the bike. In reality, these are not huge bags, and the 30 liter will be a perfect size to rest on the pillion seat. I may also pick up another 20 liter too. I am using the 5 liter bag as my tool bag (all tools nicely wrapped in cloth so as not to soil the pretty white liner!), and since my best insurance against ever breaking down is carrying every tool I might ever need, another 5 liter bag will accommodate my obsessive compulsive tendencies, and the two will fit perfectly in my tank bag.

Truly the Kriega bags, while modestly expensive, are world class. And the 10 year warranty is very likely an understatement to their actual lifespan. I am one happy camper, and the Guzzi one dapper looking machine.
