I ultimately ended up with the Shoei Neotec for a few key reasons. For me, I found myself gravitating to another Shoei. The previous Shoei served me well and I had confidence in the fit and quality that Shoei would provide. Basically, I was having a difficult time spending a chunk of dough on another manufacturer with comparable features.
For features, I really dig the internal retractable sun visor. The pinlock lens visor is new to me and seems to work well. Internal helmet padding was eyeglass friendly also. I didn't feel the frames pressing against my temples and still have a very snug fit. As we are into the cooler weather, I cannot provide a complete opinion on venting at this time. I can say when the vents are open, I definitely feel air flowing good from the chin/visor and top vents.
The modular aspect of this helmet is nice. I find it convenient to continue a conversation when saddling up or speaking to my fellow riding buddies when stopped. With the helmet closed and riding at speed, I tend to believe it is quieter than my previous helmet. This may be attributed to the snug fit.
I also really like that this helmet is Bluetooth friendly. Having recessed spaces for the speakers is nice. For you gear veterans, realize that this new feature is new to me. On the other hand, I have a Sena 20S and found that I needed to be sure the unit was mounted forward enough to where the pop up antenna would not interfere with the internal visor control.
On the gripe side, I would have liked the face shield to have the option of a small open position for venting. The first detent when opening is more than I prefer. Lastly, the cost was a big pill to swallow. To get past some buyers remorse, I fall back to my comments about having confidence in a manufacturer's reputation of building a quality helmet without compromising on safety.
PROS: Void Of Pressure Points, Fits Snug, Good Visibility, Comfortable Padding
BEST USES: Poor Weather, Protection, Everyday Rides
When I wear this helmet on my unfaired Dyna, it's very quiet. On my fully faired Road Glide, it's annoyingly loud and the buffeting is noticeable. I'll need to play with windshield heights and shapes, but for now that sucks since I put far more miles on the Road Glide.
As others have noted, this helmet is expensive. Is it the best I've owned? Absolutely, but I still believe you're paying a premium for the Shoei name. When I was shopping for a modular helmet, once I put the Neotec on my noggin, I knew that's what I would end up with, no matter the price.
The Neotec is really comfortable, visibilty is very good, as is the ventilation. It still gets warm in there in stop and go traffic, but that's not unique to the Neotec.
I'm happy and satisfied with the Neotec in every way except for the pain caused to my bank account. I'd still buy it if given another chance.
PROS: Good Visibility, Comfortable Padding, Fog Resistant, Adequate Ventilation, Features
BEST USES: Poor Weather, Protection, Everyday Rides
PROs: Field of view; my previous modular (Fulmer) was restrictive of my viewing angle over the shoulder. The Neotec is comparatively 'wide-open" allowing me to quickly see BEHIND me not only beside.
The build quality is a major selling point for me, coming from the arena of mass-market lids, this thing just feels 'solid' in so many ways. With my other helmets I always raise the face shield with a bit of concern as I have had a hinge or latch break on several occasions (usually the Fulmer) and shields that fly away. The shields on the cheap helmets feel like they will crease if I'm not careful. The shield on this Neo feels like you could pick ME up by it. Not floppy or flimsy and the hinge seems rock-solid.
The shield has a PinLoc insert which prevents fogging. This is a masterful invention which I welcome as I ALWAYS have had fogging issues even in the summer; even with 3/4 lids(!). There are detents to hold the shield partially open.
There is a built-in hideaway sun shield. The utility of this can hardly be overstated. Bright sun/shady spot/bright sun/tunnel- etc. Sun shield down, up, back down as needed, instantly while wearing prescription glasses.
The sun shield is also effectively dark, not just barely tinted as was another I had tried.
The shield has a watertight rubber seal, a huge plus.
The fact that it is "modular" or "flip face" is a requirement of mine.
Comfort. Not much to add about the importance of this. It is very comfortable for me with no pressure points, however, it does get pretty hot. I'll take it off and at that point I realize how much I've been sweating in it.
Cons: The vents are NOISY! As long as the top front vent is closed, this is the quietest modular helmet I have worn...but open the top vent and the noise is annoying.
The latches on the chin bar don't look the part. They may well be as strong as a vault, but they don't LOOK substantial...especially given the price class.
I have trouble with the closure of the chin bar. It works aces when it is not on my head; When worn, (and due to my fat cheeks) sometimes it will refuse to latch once or twice. To its credit, it never partially latches. It is either solidly locked or not at all.
No SNELL listing. Why not? Has Shoei not offered up the Neotec for testing? Why Not? There are now at least 2 (two) Modular helmets that ARE SNELL listed including M2010!
Still no effective QD strap mechanism.
Price. Good Grief!
