Jumping through hoops to get that new bike onto base? While Icon can’t help you bypass military regulations, they can help you meet them without looking like a construction worker. The Mil Spec vest was designed to pass all military requirements for a mandatory reflective vest. No bright orange reflective vest is ever going to win you fashion awards, but if you have to wear one, and you do, it might as well have the style and features that won’t make you cringe.
Meets MIL spec standards so there's no way they could turn you away from the gate if you're wearing one. The ID holder is especially handy and the other pockets could be used to hold your bike documents or other small gadgets (such as cell phones and mp3 players).
PROS: Meets MIL spec, Reflective tape, Adjustable waist, Storage
CONS: Screams "MILITARY"
BEST USES: Day time, Evening, On base, Everyday Riding, Off base
As cool as orange can be..... I used to put my vest on right before entering the base and removing it right after I left. With this vest, it doesn't flap in the wind and its not dorky looking! I save so much time not having to take it off and on so many times.
I bought this 'cause I was tired of the yellow reflective belt flapping around in the wind. I bought the smaller size, and had to return it for the larger size. If you have to be taped when you take a p.t. test, or wear size "large" shirts, then get the larger size. The I.D. card holder is a little tight at first, but after washing it and setting the card in it overnight it is now easy to pull the card in and out...and occasionally the gate guards will not ask me to pull it out. The zipper pocket on the front is great for holding other cards, such as my airfield security badge, and has room for a garage door opener. The Velcro back pocket holds my gloves perfectly, and the whole thing will fold up and fit in my saddlebag.
One or two things that could be improved would be to make the zipper pull tab a little larger, for use while wearing gloves, and make the elastic laces on the side more adjustable.
PROS: Convienent ID pocket, LOTS of visibility, Meets DoD regulations
CONS: Side adjusters need work, Zippter tab too small
While I like the vest and feel the quality is good. I am a big guy and found that it is sized a little small. I purchased the 2X-4X and it fits me snug with NO coat (I normally wear a 2X shirt). I fixed it by going to the fabric store and getting some rat-tail cord and making longer laces for the sides.
PROS: Lightweight, Pockets, Badge Holder
BEST USES: Visibility at night, Getting on military bases
