I attempted using this under a full face Scorpion Exo-1000 helmet. This item is best used under a 3/4 or half-helmet. When you put on a properly fitting full-face helmet the fabric of the face mask rolls down your cheeks, so you have to put your finger inside your helmet to push back up into place on your face. Also when in the typical casual riding tuck on a sportsbike(2008 R6 in my case), the velcro pops apart on the back of your neck. This item appears to have been made for people with smaller necks. The fitment over the nose is perfect which makes it even stranger that the velcro fasteners are made so short on the back of the face mask. Even though the velcro pops apart in the back, my helmet holds the face-mask in place with no problem due to the snug fit of the helmet. Your full-faced helmet(if properly fitted) will feel pretty tight initially when wearing this face mask. This item is clearly made for people who ride in a completely upright position(cruisers/tourers) and have smaller necks. I do like this item and can look past it's negatives because it does it's job. I can always attach a length of velcro to the existing straps and make them longer. I do like the quality of the material used. Lastly, if you have a bluetooth microphone attached to the inner part of your full-faced helmet, you will have to fudge with that as well when putting on and taking off your full-face helmet while wearing this mask. Nice item, just better if used with 3/4 or half helmets and riding in upright position.
PROS: Item Feels Well Made
CONS: Not For Full-faced Helmet, Tight Around 16 Inch Neck
Just like the neck guard, this product comes in a single size that is too small for me. I have a 17-inch neck, and with the velcro straps just barely connected, this thing is so tight that my nose is completely flattened. Unfortunately, this product is totally useless. It looks to be the perfect cold weather accessory. I just wish it fit.
I can't say enough good things about this product. I only wish I could find winter gloves that work as well as this product. I wear a full helmet so it does cause a little extra fog on my shield, but I get passed that by rolling it down to my chin. Also, the neoprene is a little hard to breath through so this option is almost a must for me. As far as it keeping you warm, there is no doubt this is the best cold weather piece I own. I ride my sport bike year round, and just this morning rode in to work at 80 mph+ with a 37 degree temp. Needless to say, the only part of my body that stayed warm was my neck. I highly recommend this for anyone riding in winter weather. Best money I've ever spent!
The mask is great on cold/windy days. It keeps my face as well as the front of my neck comfortable. The biggest problem is it tends to fog up my glasses while wearing. I keep it down to where I can continue seeing by exhaling through my mouth while keeping my mouth close to the face vents. I also punched out the holes of the vents a bit bigger. Still, the good outweighs the bad, just have to make sure I can keep seeing the road.
I ordered this early Oct, while on sale, as a full Balaclava alternative. I have yet to wear them in the cold, my review is focusing on fit. I am on the larger size, 5'11, 230 and I naturally gear towards the xl and xxl sizes. This face mask was offered in one size fits all so I purchased the only size available.
This face mask is almost uncomfotably tight. At its loosest fit, the velcro is barley touching and feels as if it will come loose. If I tighten it, it feels as if the nose section rides high and when I exhale through my nose, I feel my breath coming up into my eyes, rather than the nose hole. I wear glasses and I feel this will cause unwanted fogging in the cold weather.
This is the 6th piece of HeatOut/FreezeOut gear that I have purchased this year. Of the 6, 3 have had to be either returned or repaired before use. This piece arrived with both tabs having the loop portion of the velcro, which rendered it unuseable. Rather than spend the money to return it, I sewed a piece of hook velcro on to one of the tabs and now it works.
It is my opinion that manufacturer quality control is lacking in this product line.
I would recommend this product line only with the caveat that there may need to be some repair or modification before use.
It opened up while ridding at 45 MPH. I had a hard time fastening it. I am not large and do not have a large head, but the velcro closure does not go all the way to the end for secure fastening. Either need another size offering or a product improvement with the velcro.
I have a Shoei RF 800 full face helmet and I wear prescription glasses. They. both fog up when it's cool outside. Adding the nose guard to the helmet helped but this face mask plus the nose guard solved the problem. It's also great at keeping wind from going down your neck.
