Arai Defiant Pro-Cruise Timeline Helmet
The Defiant Pro-Cruise Helmet adds the Arai Pro Shade system, which operates as both a peak and as a sun shade. The Pro Shade System is a small peak that is locked in position. Unlocking is easy; just pull the Pro Shade System forward, then it can be flipped down with a flick of the hand to act as an effective sun-visor.
The Arai Defiant was built for the upright riding position with its aggressive, integrated chin spoiler, designed specifically to guide wind around the neck and to improve the aerodynamic properties of the helmet. The Arai Defiant also features the exclusive FCS cheek pad system, a multi-density one-piece EPS liner, micro-fitting interior padding, pull down spoiler and a Dry-Cool liner material.
The Hyper Ridge Bumper circles the bottom of the shell both adding additional strength and also lowering the helmet's center of gravity, while flaring the helmet opening slightly to increase the ease of putting on and taking off. The Defiant uses Arai's the SAI Max Vision Pinlock Shield with Brow Vents and includes the Pinlock insert lens. The SAI Max Vision shield has been widened by 5mm left and right and offers one of the widest eyeports available for excellent peripheral vision.

I purchased this helmet because Arai is renowned for their safety and build quality; with a uniform shape, fiberglass composite construction, Snell certified, with a 5 year warranty.
It was on sale as discontinued-closeout. The helmet I received was new-in-box with a born-on date 3 years before purchase (2015).
I don’t care for the looks and think it’s ugly, but I’m an ugly guy so that’s alright with me.
Fitment is good. I have a ‘Large’ head in most brands and am slightly on the rounder side of intermediate-oval. The Arai feels like it sits a little high on the top of my head, is snug at the crown and very snug at the cheeks. Nothing is uncomfortable enough to complain about. It should be exceptionally comfortable when fully broken-in. I removed the ‘peel away’ foam at the temples to get a better fit. I guess I have a large nose, it barely touches the breath-guard. I don’t have clearance issues fitting the newer Arai Defiant-X.
By comparison, Shoei’s RF-1200 fit equally snug at the crown but awfully tight at the cheeks. It also had more nose and mouth clearance.
Arai’s visor works as expected, smooth and positive, with a very tall view angle. Removal and replacement takes practice. The visor-shade system works as advertised. In the up-position facing forward, little noticeable drag or extra wind noise, more noticeable on side-checks. It is not visible when up but reduces sun-glare off the visor at certain angles. Coverage is better than many reviews cautioned. I wonder if scratches will develop from touching the same spots over-and-over with a dusty glove, but no issues yet. Standard replacement visors are very expensive.
The helmet is loud--a little quieter than my last Bell lid but earplugs are still necessary. Opening/closing vents did very little to quiet noise.
Ventilation is excellent, flows efficiently and directly to the mouth and top of the head. Cracking the visor increases air movement across the face and visor. Actuation of visor and vents takes practice but isn’t difficult.
The helmet works best in upright and 3/4 position. The back of the helmet bumps my jacket in a tuck.
I'm giving 4 starts based on sale price. I would drop a star if paying full retail.
I recommend Arai for safety, if it fits and can afford it.
PRO: Safe, comfortable, custom-fit, functional shade system, well ventilated
CON: Expensive lid, expensive parts, heavy, loud, less clearance at nose and mouth, ugly
