The tragic passing of Marco Simoncelli is an
enormous loss to the sport of motorcycling. Cycle
Gear had the honor and pleasure of meeting and
working with Marco at this year's Laguna Seca
Moto GP. It was instantly clear that Marco was
a true professional and that he cared deeply
about his fans.
Over the years Cycle Gear has conducted
hundreds of autograph signings and personal
appearances. Occasionally, celebrities arrive
late to an event and are then quick to leave,
disappointing fans who have waited a long time
in line. At Laguna Seca, Marco arrived at our
booth Saturday afternoon, on time, for his
scheduled 30 minute autograph session. An
estimated 300 fans anxiously awaited his arrival,
some had been waiting more than 3 hours in the
hot sun! "Super Sic" was barely able to make it
through one-third of the crowd during his allotted
30-minute time slot. But then, even though it was already
6:00 PM on Saturday night, he cheerfully stayed much
later until the very last fan's poster was signed. And if that
wasn't enough, he then took the time to pose for photos
with the Cycle Gear team!
Marco's commitment to the sport, on and off the
track, was obvious. It was evident too that not
only was Marco a fan favorite, he was clearly
destined to be a world champion and a
dominant force in Moto GP for years to come.
The Cycle Gear Team is grateful to have had the
extraordinary privilege of getting to know this unique
individual and gifted athlete. We mourn his loss and
extend our deepest condolences to Marco's family
and friends.
